Sustainable Introduction Period<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The Sustainable Introduction Period (Duurzame Introductie Tijd, DIT) is a competition between introduction week committees from various cities. Introduction weeks compete for the \u2018Most Sustainable Introduction Week\u2019 award. In addition to this prize, there is also a general \u2018best practices\u2019 prize, for which all kinds of student organisations can submit an entry. <\/strong><\/p>

The aim of the DIT is to raise awareness of sustainability among prospective students. The DIT takes place during the introduction weeks in August. This is when thousands of students get their first taste of student life. These weeks are packed with activities and parties, in which sustainability can and should easily be incorporated. That is why we are challenging all introduction weeks to take part in the DIT! <\/p>

The DIT was launched in 2012 by the campaign agency EEN. Together with our partners UMEF and GDO, we have been organising the ultimate sustainability battle between freshers\u2019 weeks since 2014. Until 2020, the DIT went by a different name: the Sustainable Introductory Stunt (Duurzame Introductiestunt, DIS). The concept is very simple: orientation weeks and committees are assessed on their overall sustainability via a questionnaire, which is completed by a DIT staff member during a visit to the event. Evidence must be provided for all items on the questionnaire. A jury decides which freshers\u2019 week wins, based on a number of criteria. Since 2021, prizes have also been awarded to the freshers\u2019 weeks that finish in second and third place. This is to encourage all the weeks to put their best foot forward in order to win a prize. This year, freshers\u2019 weeks were finally able to take place once again, packed with festivities. Of course, we assessed them once again in terms of their sustainability, with the following results: <\/div>

The most sustainable \u2018best practice\u2019 was won by AGREEn with their game called \u2018recycleball\u2019. In this game, they had a bin full of rubbish and four different bins (paper, PMD, organic waste, general waste). The aim was to throw the rubbish into the correct bin, but from a short distance away to make it a bit more challenging, of course. After much discussion about what to recycle and how, the participants threw all the rubbish into the bins, and we then explained why the recycling choices they had made were either wrong or correct (for example, a pizza box does not belong in the paper bin because it has grease on it). <\/p>

DIT 2021<\/span><\/p>

Due to the coronavirus and the measures put in place to tackle it, many freshers\u2019 weeks this year have taken place online or have been cancelled. The freshers\u2019 weeks that did go ahead and took part this year have been ranked in a top 3 of the most sustainable freshers\u2019 weeks. <\/div>

DIS 2020<\/h2>

Despite the coronavirus restrictions, which meant that the introduction weeks had to be organised online, the DIS went ahead in a modified format. Participants had to tick off as many challenges as possible from a bingo card full of sustainable (online) challenges. The online awards ceremony took place on 3 October 2020. <\/p>
